In late February 2024, Wistful, a beloved horse, received routine hock injections to ease her winter stiffness—something that had helped her before. But a week later, disaster struck: a severe infection swelled her hock, leaving her septic and fighting for her life. Her devoted owner rushed her to the vet, where emergency arthroscopic surgery saved her from the brink.
The ordeal was far from over. The next day, Wistful stopped eating and soon colicked violently, requiring yet another life-saving surgery. She rallied briefly, only to spike a mysterious fever. Then, her belly incision burst open from infection, forcing her into a hernia belt for three grueling months of wound care. Tragically, the belt caused a deep pressure ulcer behind her withers, nearly to the bone, despite every protective measure.
As her belly healed—overgranulation treated with Proud’s Off—Wistful developed a large hernia and nerve damage, making riding too risky. Retired to a peaceful life, she emerged stronger than ever. Now, over 18 months later, this miraculous mare moves with grace, pain-free most days, aided by Equioxx for occasional stiffness. To her owner, Wistful is a beacon of unbreakable spirit—a testament to the will to live that defies all odds. In her golden years, she inspires all who know her story: love, perseverance, and a fighter’s heart can conquer even the darkest trials. Welcome to Fallons Farm sweet girl. We love you so much.
